Michael Putegnat’s Laguna Awarded
2007 Annual “IPPY” Award
for Best Regional Fiction

June 6, 2007 – New York City, NY – Organizers of the 11th annual Independent Publisher Book Awards, conducted to honor the year's best independently published books, have announced the results for the 2007 competition.  Michael Putegnat’s novel Laguna was awarded the gold medal for Best Regional Fiction – South. The awards presentation ceremony was held in New York on Friday, June 1st, during the annual BookExpo America convention.

“It is an unexpected honor,” said author Michael Putegnat. “Laguna is my first book and I am particularly glad readers are enjoying it. I hope it will bring a little more attention to our unique culture, history and the beauty of our undiscovered world on the coast.”

Putegnat, a Rio Grande Valley native, says he writes to entertain and to inform, particularly on issues of the day. “The novel is a useful medium for addressing the subtleties of policy implications that cold statistics often obscure,” he said. “For example, I worry that our Laguna Madre is right now under threat from certain short-sighted Texas state agencies and the oil and gas industry, who want to turn our bay into a collecting field. Laguna is about ordinary people standing up against this sort of invasion. Its message is that everyday citizens can make a difference.”

This year’s awards attracted entries from all 50 U.S. states, eight Canadian provinces, and 18 countries overseas. 1,510 independent authors and publishers submitted 2,100 books to the contest. Launched in 1996, the 2007 IPPYs were presented to winners in 65 subject categories and to the best regional fiction and non-fiction titles from across North America.

“What impressed us about this year’s entries was the passion and commitment of the authors for their topics,” said awards director Jim Barnes. “So many of these books deal with serious issues facing citizens of the world today: the threat of war, terrorism, health epidemics, climate change, and the loss of human rights.”

“Independent authors and publishers are the conscience of our culture. It is the courage of these outspoken authors and visionary artists that the IPPY awards are designed to recognize,” said Barnes.

The 11th Annual Independent Publisher Book Awards presentation ceremony, entitled Books Off-Broadway: a Celebration of Excellence in Independent Publishing was held on Friday, June 1st, in New York City.

Laguna tells the story of a powerful four-generation Texas dynasty that has amassed vast ranchlands, ruthlessly applying the family motto: “Forward by all means.” A crisis looms and to save his empire from financial ruin, John Magne IV must destroy a critically important and delicate coastal bay ecosystem to drill for natural gas.

Opposing the Magne’s overwhelming bought-and-paid-for political influence are five seemingly ordinary but determined women, with separate histories but converging agendas.  Together with two brothers, unwillingly pulled into the conflict, they struggle with personal fears and flaws to find the inner strength to do what is right.

Cast against an accurate historical backdrop, Laguna explores current environmental, political, social, and racial issues that fill today’s headlines, exposing the dark underbelly of corrupt politics and greed-driven investment banking. Ancient wrongs have gone too long unsettled.

Laguna is a classic page turner with a satisfying and climactic double clutch ending reminding us that in our conflicted human nature,  vengeance is merely the obverse of justice.
